President Donald Trump’s former attorney Michael Cohen is “a proven liar” whose recent plea deal with special counsel Robert Mueller is an attempt “to get out of a long-term prison sentence,” Trump’s current lawyer Rudy Giuliani said Thursday.
Cohen, formerly Trump’s longtime personal attorney, pleaded guilty to lying to Congress on Thursday about a Trump property in Russia.
"It's no surprise that Cohen lied to Congress. He's a proven liar who is doing everything he can to get out of a long-term prison sentence for serious crimes of bank and tax fraud that had nothing to do with the Trump Organization," said Giuliani, who is representing Trump in the Russia investigation, in a statement to The Hill.
“It is important to understand that documents that the Special Counsel’s Office is using to show that Cohen lied to Congress were voluntarily disclosed by the Trump Organization because there was nothing to hide.”
Before Cohen entered his first guilty plea, Giuliani defended him as an “honorable lawyer,” before saying that he hadn’t known Cohen very well when he said that.
