President Donald Trump reacted to criticism he had claimed a tremendous success in the midterm elections where his Republican Party lost its majority in the House, saying "it was very close to a complete victory."
"I will be honest, I thought that it was a very close to complete victory," President Trump told reporters during his Wednesday news conference. "When you are looking at it from the standpoint of the negotiation. When you are looking at it from the standpoint of dealmaking, because it's all about dealmaking, and again, if we had the majority and one or two or three votes to play with, we would never, we would have been at a standstill."
President Trump then pointed to the races won in Georgia and Florida, where he "campaigned" very hard against celebrities and former President Barack Obama.
"Hey look, I won Georgia and President Obama campaigned very hard in Georgia, and Oprah Winfrey campaigned very, very hard, all over the television, and I said, 'this is going to be tough.'
"I only had me, and I didn't have anybody else, and went to Georgia and we had one of the largest crowds that anybody has ever seen ever at a political rally and you know what, [GOP gubernatorial candidate Brian Kemp] won. And he won actually by a pretty good margin, he won."
President Trump also lauded the close races won by Republicans Rick Scott, for Senate over Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., and Ron DeSantis, for Florida governor.
"I think it is a great victory, and some of the news this morning was that it was in fact a great victory," President Trump said. "But looking at it from the standpoint of gridlock, and I really believe there is going to be much less gridlock because of the way this is going than any other way."
President Trump said working on a bipartisan basis with the Democratic-controlled House could still produce results vs. "gridlock."
"I really believe that we have a chance to get along very well with the Democrats, and if that is the case, we can do a tremendous amount of legislation and get it approved by both parties," President Trump said.
