Former Fox News host Gretchen Carlson — whose sexual harassment suit led to the resignation of CEO Roger Ailes — appeared to be mystified by President Donald Trump's decision Thursday to hire an Ailes ally, Bill Shine.

"Life . . . works in mysterious ways," she tweeted.

Shine served as co-president after Ailes resigned in 2016 amid a flurry of sexual harassment complaints —including Carlson's suit — that rocked Fox News; he has been hired by Trump to serve as the deputy chief of staff for communications.

The network settled the lawsuit against Carlson and issued an apology to her. Shine himself resigned last year after a firestorm of criticism on how he handled the sex harassment complaints.

After Thursday's announcement of Shine's hiring at the White House, a brief statement was issued saying he "brings over two decades of television programming, communications experience to the role."
