Rep. Hagedorn to Newsmax TV: Dem Spending Bill 'Over the Top'

By    |   Friday, 05 March 2021 10:44 PM EST

Rep. Jim Hagedorn of Minnesota told Newsmax TV on Friday that $1 trillion remains from Congress’ first two attempts to mitigate the economic impact of the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19, and that the Democrats’ latest $1.9 trillion spending bill is just ''over the top.''

Pointing to $350 billion targeted for ''blue states, which even The New York Times says is not necessary,'' among other provisions, Hagedorn expressed concern for a ''debt bomb'' that could explode.

''This is on top of the $4 trillion that many of us in Congress had voted to pass for folks,'' said Hagedorn, 58, a second-term Republican whose 1st Congressional District makes up the lower fifth of Minnesota. ''We want to help people get from one side of the coronavirus to the other, keep our businesses going, employees and others. But of the $4 trillion we’ve put out there, $1 trillion remains unspent.

''I just think this is over the top.''

Hagedorn said he hoped that Democrat Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia would vote against his party’s effort to pass the bill in the Senate.

''I think right now what we have to do is keep letting people know that there’s already still $1 trillion out there to be spent,'' Hagedorn said on "Spicer & Co." ''And so maybe we should wait and see how things go over the next month or two, because it seems like in a lot of states, things are getting better and we might be able to avoid some of this spending down the road.

''But we certainly shouldn’t put more of it available until we’ve spent what was already appropriated.''
