Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., announced his bid to become Democratic Caucus chair, Roll Call is reporting.

The move sets off a three-way race for the post. California Reps. Linda Sánchez and Barbara Lee have already announced they are vying for the position, Roll Call noted.

The three are members of the Progressive Caucus.

In a letter to fellow Democrats, Jeffries said his candidacy is focused on three principles:

  •  “Our team is strongest when everyone is on the playing field.”
  •  “Learn from the past, succeed in the future.”
  •  “The best defense is a good offense.”

Politico reported some in Congress had been pushing Jeffries to challenge House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., for the speaker's job.
