If President Donald Trump decides to withdraw the United States from the Iran nuclear deal, that would result in a lack of trust toward the U.S., Iran's President Hassan Rouhani said.
Rouhani spoke with NBC News ahead of Trump's Tuesday speech at the United Nations General Assembly and addressed the nuclear deal that was struck between Iran and several countries, including the U.S.
"The exiting of the United States from such an agreement would carry a high cost. Meaning, that subsequent to such a probable action by the United States of America, no one will trust America again," Rouhani said.
"There is no higher price to be paid than this because after such a possible scenario, which country would be willing to sit across the table from the United States of America and talk about international issues?"
Rouhani explained that the 2016 agreement, which is officially called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, was struck after more than two years of back and forth between all parties involved.
"Every single word was analyzed many times by countries involved before its ratification," he said. "So if the United States were to not adhere to the commitment and trample upon this agreement, this will mean it will carry with it the lack of subsequent trust from countries toward the United States because the greatest capital that any country has is trust and credibility."
Trump spoke about the Iran deal during his speech Tuesday, hinting that he may not recertify it ahead of a deadline to do so next month.
"I don't think you've heard the last of it," Trump said of the deal that was designed to curb Iran's nuclear program. Critics say it's not strong enough to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.
