More Americans think the quality of care they're receiving is worse under Obamacare rather than better — and nearly half said their healthcare costs were rising under the new law, a new survey reports.
The
Washington Post-ABC News survey showed that 29 percent of the 1,000 adults surveyed said that their care is getting worse under the Affordable Care Act. Only 14 percent say coverage is better, while 53 percent said it has remained the same.
The findings back up other recent polls that show the public has soured on Obamacare even as many don't think it should be repealed. Instead, they want it fixed.
In a Kaiser Family Foundation poll released Tuesday, nearly 3 in 5 Americans said they would prefer to see their representatives in Congress “work to improve” the healthcare law rather than “work to repeal the law and replace it with something else.”
That poll found impressions of Obamacare warming only slightly from the low points of November through January.
Opinions of the law remain negative, with 46 percent now having a generally unfavorable view of it and 38 percent generally positive, the poll found.
Democratic pollster Stanley Greenberg also found in his surveys a similar division on the question of fixing the law versus repealing it. Among likely voters in competitive congressional districts, 52 percent say the country should “implement and fix the healthcare reform law” while 42 percent say they want to “repeal and replace” it,
the Los Angeles Times reported.
In the Post-ABC poll, 47 percent responded their health costs were rising under Obamacare, compared with only 8 percent saying that their expenses were declining.
A whopping 57 percent of those polled said they disapproved of how President Barack Obama has handled his signature domestic policy achievement, with only 37 percent saying they approved of the president's execution of his plan.
Regarding overall healthcare costs, 58 percent said they are on the rise. That compared to only 11 percent who said costs were going down.
And 44 percent of those polled said the nation's healthcare system overall is getting worse, compared to 24 percent who said it was improving. Only 29 percent said the system was about the same.
In other questions regarding Obamacare, the survey found that 50 percent said getting the healthcare law off the ground and running was going worse than they expected. Forty-one percent said it exceeded expectations.
The poll found 48 percent of the Americans surveyed by the news organizations said they oppose the law, compared to 44 percent who support it.
The survey of 1,000 adults was conducted April 24-27. The margin of error is 3.5 percentage points.
The negativity is no surprise to healthcare experts.
“New ObamaCare policies cost about 35 percent more and that increase can come in the form of higher premiums, higher deductibles or narrower networks," Robert Laszewski of Health Policy and Strategy Associates told Fox News.
Added John Goodman of the National Center for Policy Analysis: "They (Americans) may be better off if they can get a subsidy, but the underlying costs are higher and they're going to be even higher next year."
