Hillary Clinton’s schedule over the next few weeks clearly indicates that she still has not made up her mind up whether to join the presidential race in 2016,
Politico reported.
The former first lady is widely expected to make a run for the White House, and a new CNN/ORC International poll shows that 65 percent of left-leaning Americans would
support Clinton, compared to the 10 percent who would vote for her presumed closest Democratic Party rival, Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren.
But Clinton, who became a grandmother in September when her daughter Chelsea gave birth, is still mulling over whether to take another shot at the presidency eight years after she lost the nomination to President Barack Obama, sources close to her told Politico.
Democratic strategists and advisers had hoped that the former secretary of state would have already formed an exploratory committee to build momentum toward an announcement while also getting potential donors on board.
But other allies appear to have convinced her that she should not create a committee until well into the new year, according to Politico, which noted that Clinton felt pressured into joining the race too early in 2007 when Obama announced his exploratory committee.
By putting off her decision, she will delay the inevitable onslaught from the GOP, as well as from her potential Republican rivals for the presidency, noted one adviser, adding, "She should take her time."
Political pundits who had been expecting Clinton to make an announcement about her presidential intentions soon after the midterm elections, now say it could be months before she’s ready to say yea or nay.
Clinton has already scheduled paid speeches until at least Feb. 24, according to Politico. Furthermore, White House adviser John Podesta, who is expected to play a big part on Clinton’s team, has suggested that he will probably start in his job until after the State of the Union address in late January.
The problem she faces is that, if she decides ultimately against running in 2016 and does not make that decision to the end of February, she may damage Democratic chances of retaining the White House, the political news website reported, quoting sources in the party.
Possibly in the hope that Clinton does not decide to run,
former Virginia Sen. Jim Webb announced last month that he was forming a presidential exploratory committee to study whether he should join the fray for the Democratic nomination.
Politico said that Clinton may make it clear in January that she is planning to run but then delay an official announcement until the timing is perfect for her and the party.
Either way, the report suggested that Republicans are already gearing up for her to enter the race, with at least two outside GOP groups planning to release attack ads against her in early 2015.
