Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump's campaign released a video ad that slams his Democratic presidential opponent, Hillary Clinton, for saying, "You could put half of Trump's supporters into what I call 'the basket of deplorables.'"
The 30-second video includes a narrator at the end saying, "You know what's deplorable? Hillary Clinton viciously demonizing hard-working people like you."
The video is supported by a $2 million ad purchased in Ohio, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Florida, according to CNN.
After she made the remarks, CNN reported that Clinton said she regretted saying "half" of Trump's followers.
"Last night I was 'grossly generalistic,' and that's never a good idea. I regret saying 'half,' – that was wrong," she said.
In a "Fox and Friends" appearance, Trump said he believed that Clinton's comments were a major error on her part.
"When I saw this in its full form, and I saw the anger with which she said it, the way she spoke, I think it's the single biggest mistake of the political season."
In her original statement, Clinton said, "To just be grossly generalistic, you can put half of Trump supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables. Right? Racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic, you name it. And unfortunately, there are people like that and he has lifted them up. He has given voice to their websites that used to only have 11,000 people, now have 11 million. He tweets and retweets offensive, hateful, mean-spirited rhetoric."
New York Times columnist Charles M. Blow said Clinton making the comments was not a good idea as a politician, but he agreed with them.
"What Clinton said was impolitic, but not incorrect. There are things a politician cannot say," Blow wrote, adding that Trump "is a deplorable candidate—to put it charitably."
