Emails from former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's private server that were received in February 2009 appear to contradict her claim she didn't use the server before March 2009 and that "as far as she knew" she had turned over all her government-related documents, according to the conservative watchdog group
Judicial Watch.
Government documents including the email from Clinton's then-Chief of Staff Cheryl Mills were obtained as part of Judicial Watch's Freedom of Information Act lawsuit on documents relating to Clinton's use of unauthorized electronic devices.
The February 13, 2009 email from Mills discusses the request by Clinton and her staff to have State allow them to use modified BlackBerrys to send sensitive information.
"In meeting with the NSA person today ([Redacted] NSA's rep to DOS) – she indicated they could address our BB so that BB could work in the sciff [Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility] and be secure based upon some modifications that could be done to each BB (more below)," Mills wrote.
Mills attached an email from an unnamed NSA official:
Debbie Plunkett, D/Chief of our Information Assurance Directorate, is personally assembling a knowledgeable team to work with you and other members of your staff to move forward on your Blackberry requirement. She will engage State’s CIO and DS/comms security folks to ensure everyone is aware of the art of the possible …
I am confident we can get to YES on this! [Emphasis in original]
"That's good news," Clinton wrote back.
The NSA eventually agreed to modify six BlackBerrys for Clinton and her staff, warning against using them outside the SCIF. But those warning went unheeded, according to Judicial Watch.
Clinton has stated, including under oath, that she has turned over all government-related emails.
"So now we know that, contrary to her statement under oath suggesting otherwise, Hillary Clinton did not turn over all her government emails," Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton said. "We also know why Hillary Clinton falsely suggests she didn’t use clintonemail.com account prior to March, 18, 2009 – because she didn’t want Americans to know about her February 13, 2009, email that shows that she knew her Blackberry and email use was not secure."
