Hillary Clinton's assertion that an FBI investigation of her private email use is little more than a security review is bold "misleading," a former FBI assistant director says.
"They [the FBI] do not do security reviews," Steve Pomerantz, who spent 28 years at the intelligence agency,
tells Fox News.
"What they primarily do and what they are clearly doing in this instance is a criminal investigation."
In Thursday's Democratic presidential candidate's debate with surging rival Sen. Bernie Sanders, the former secretary of state described the FBI probe of her email use as "a security review that was requested. It is being carried out," and that she's "100 percent confident" the inquiry will find no wrongdoing on her part.
"There is no mechanism for [Clinton] to be briefed and to have information about the conduct, the substance, the direction or the result of any FBI investigation," Pomerantz tells Fox News.
The State Department admitted a week ago Clinton's controversial practice contained government secrets that were so delicate that
22 of the missives will not be publicly released out of national security concerns.
Clinton is battling a
surge in voter support for Sanders that has whittled away her once-commanding lead in the race.
