The FBI may be able to recover some data from Hillary Clinton's email server even though her campaign had previously acknowledged that there was an attempt to wipe the server clean before it was turned over to the agency last week, two sources with direct knowledge of the investigation told NBC News.

The FBI "will try to figure what's there, how it got there and who put it there," a source familiar with the investigation into the server told NBC News.

Last week, Clinton announced she was turning over her private email server and a backup USB drive to comply with a Justice Department investigation into her use of private email after it was revealed that the Intelligence Community inspector general had determined that two emails contained "top secret" information.

Clinton's attorney, David Kendall, also handed over a thumb drive that contained the emails from Clinton's personal account. The State Department had allowed Kendall to store the thumb drive in a safe in his Washington, D.C., law office. But after the highly classified information was discovered, the FBI sought control of the device.

By one report, the server that was turned over by a private company in New Jersey was blank and did not contain useful information.

Hillary Clinton dismissed questions over her use of a private email server, saying it was "nothing to worry about," and that the controversy was being fueled by Republicans for partisan reasons.

"This will burn itself out," Clinton said in an interview with Telemundo, according to NBC News. "It's being turned into a partisan attack connected, unfortunately, with the continuing Republican partisanship over Benghazi, which was a great tragedy and has already been investigated from one side to the other."

"Look, I've been around a long time," Clinton added, according to NBC. "I know when they can't beat you on the issues, when they can't beat you on your experience ... they're going to come up with something, and you just have to keep smiling and go through it.

"There's nothing to worry about," she said.
