Two of Hillary Clinton's most trusted aides got into a digital smack-down over Secret Service protection for their boss – including a jab that the women's dust-up ought to be settled privately rather than online, newly released emails of the former secretary of state show.

The scrap between aide Huma Abedin and chief of staff Cheryl Mills took place in October 2010 over an outgoing Secret Service detail, Politico reports.

"[Redacted] just filled me in on your conversations. I would have appreciated a chance to discuss this before it was finalized," Abedin snapped at Mills on Oct. 20, 2010.

The person, Abedin added, "has been a HUGE asset protecting our interests and balancing usss politics."

Politico explains USSS is the shortcut for "United States Secret Service."

"He has gone above and beyond in every way and anyone more stringent will make our life and travel more complicated," Abedin slapped. "Starting from scratch with someone else is going to be challenging."

Mills counter-punched the following day, according to an email that is part of the State Department's rolling release of the emails Clinton sent on her private server while secretary of state.

"Huma: I am always happy to discuss organizational and personnel matters, we can do that in person rather than on email," Mills hit back.

She then called the situation "an opportunity for career growth and development for [redacted] something I know you support," Politico reports of the response.

"We should embrace and reward that, even when it means we have to make new adjustments," Mills snapped. "This is rotation time and while I am sure if asked he would stay, he would miss the chance to manage the security at the [redacted]. We have [redacted]."

Clinton's emails were a major blow to her early presidential candidacy – but a monthly release of the data has guaranteed a steady drip of revelations.

The State Department expects to publicly unveil 55,000 pages of her emails by Jan. 29, 2016 – just three days before Iowa caucus-goers – cast the first votes in the Democratic primary contest.
