Customers Don't Recognize Hillary Clinton at Chipotle

By    |   Tuesday, 14 April 2015 07:56 AM EDT

In Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton's first foray into a crowd of the "everyday Americans" she hopes to champion, not a single person recognized her, The New York Times reports.

"The thing is, she has these dark sunglasses on," Charles Wright, the manager of the Chipolte restaurant in Maumee, Ohio, where Clinton stopped Monday told The Times.

"She just was another lady."

On her way to her first campaign swing since announcing her candidacy, Clinton's van — with two aides and Secret Service agents aboard — stopped for a lunch break around 1 p.m. at the suburban Toledo restaurant, the Times reports.

But no one took any notice – even when a man began to take pictures of the candidate, The Times reports. Wright had to go over security-camera recordings to verify The Times' tip that Clinton had, indeed, eaten there.

"That’s awesome that she was in here," gushed Wright, who said he was a Republican and intends to vote that way in 2016.

"We had [comedian] Kevin Hart in here, we had a couple of sports players here and there, in little Maumee," he added. "We don’t have too much going on."

After viewing the videotape, Wright told The Times the candidate, in a bright pink blouse, ordered a chicken burrito bowl and carried her own tray.

The Chipotle videotape also shows Clinton standing with Huma Abedin, her longtime aide – and wife of shamed ex-lawmaker Anthony Weiner – who's vice chairwoman of the campaign, as they waited for their food.

Wright said the Clinton and Abedin order also included a Blackberry Izze drink, a soda and a chicken salad.

Chipolte staffers were "kicking themselves right now," the 29-year-old manager confessed to The Times, adding missing a chance to meet the candidate "really hurts."

The Times notes Clinton aides are keeping many details of her campaign swing secret, in part for security purposes. Nevertheless, people spotted the former secretary of state at a gas station in Pennsylvania on Sunday.

And Monday's lunch stop was mentioned on a conference call with top donors and advisers on Monday afternoon.
