Hillary Clinton on Friday tweeted that President Donald Trump, who she called a “puppet” of Russian President Vladimir Putin, is “taking Russian help” in the 2020 election following reports that the country is interfering in the presidential race.
“Putin’s Puppet is at it again, taking Russian help for himself,” Clinton tweeted in response to MSNBC’s Kyle Griffin, who shared a report that Trump ousted acting director of national intelligence Joseph Maguire after an aide briefed lawmakers about possible Russian interference in the 2020 election with the intention of helping Trump get reelected.
Clinton wrote on Friday that Trump “knows he can’t win without it. And we can’t let it happen.”
Intelligence officials brief members of the House Intelligence Committee last week to warn about Russian activity online.
"The message was, it appears they're favoring one candidate over another, and everybody should be cautious," an unidentified source who attended the meeting told CBS News on Friday.
An unnamed national security official told CNN that the aide may have “mischaracterized” the intelligence about Russia’s preference for Trump.
"A more reasonable interpretation of the intelligence is not that they have a preference, it's a step short of that. It's more that they understand the President is someone they can work with, he's a dealmaker. But not that they prefer him over [Vermont independent Sen. Bernie] Sanders or [former South Bend, Ind. Mayor Pete] Buttigieg or anyone else. So it may have been mischaracterized,” according to the official.
