Sen. Mazie Hirono, D-Hawaii said she will donate her salary for every day of the partial government shutdown.

Hirono said the money will go to food banks in all four counties across Hawaii.

“More than 2,500 federal workers in Hawaii are either furloughed or working without pay during the holidays because (President) Donald Trump shut down the government,” she said in a statement.

"As long as Donald Trump refuses to re-open the government, I will be donating my salary to Hawaii’s food banks – who serve nearly one in eight Hawaii residents in need.”

Hirono earns $174,000 a year, which amounts to just less than $3,500 a week, Newsweek noted.

The Hill reported Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, D-Nev. said last week she would donate her salary to charity during the shutdown. And North Dakota’s senators – Republican John Hoeven and outgoing Democrat Heidi Heitkamp --  also announced they will give up their salaries while the shutdown continues.
