Florida teen activist David Hogg is calling for a "die-in" demonstration at Publix supermarkets Friday to protest the grocery store chain's support of Republican gubernatorial candidate Adam Putnam, the SunSentinel is reporting.

Hogg attends Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, where 17 people were shot and killed in February. He announced plans on Twitter to stage the protest at two local Publix stores and urged his social media followers to hold demonstrations at other Publix locations.

And while his Twitter posting made no mention of Putnam, the newspaper said the tweet was in reference to the chain's support of the candidate, whose stance on guns have earned him the NRA's A-plus rating.

Earlier this year, Hogg had urged his Twitter followers to pressure companies to stop advertising on Fox News host Laura Ingraham's show after she chided him over three rejections by universities he had applied to. She later apologized.

Plans for the latest protest follow a Tampa Bay Times' report that Publix, the heirs to the company's founder, and its current and former leaders gave $670,000 to Putnam over the past three years.

Putnam is currently Florida's agricultural commissioner.

Brian West, a spokesman for Publix, was quoted in the Tampa Bay Times story as saying: "We support pro-business candidates, and believe commissioner Putnam will make a great governor."
