Sgt. Ramon Gutierrez, an off-duty Texas policeman, died after being stuck by a hit-and-run driver, the second consecutive day that a Houston-area law enforcement officer has been killed, NBC News has reported.

The 45-year-old Harris County Sheriff's office sergeant was killed while carrying out extra traffic-control work for a convoy of oversized machinery. Gutierrez was standing near his motorcycle as he blocked an exit ramp.

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said that a woman drove around Gutierrez’s motorcycle, struck him, and then fled the scene before being caught by another police officer.

Gutierrez was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition and later died from his injuries, NBC News reported.

The driver was charged with intoxicated manslaughter, failure to stop and render aid, and evading arrest, Gonzalez said.

Gutierrez, who leaves behind a wife and three children, was a 20-year veteran of the force who served in the vehicular crimes division for the last 13 years, Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez called the slain officer a “true professional” who was “loved by many.”

He told KPRC that "for now we’re coming together as a law enforcement family asking for our community's prayer and support to lift up our team member. We have heavy hearts.”

Gutierrez's death comes one day after the death of another Houston-area officer, Cpl. Charles Galloway, a Harris County Precinct 5 deputy constable.

Galloway was attempting a traffic stop when the driver of a car he pulled over got out of his vehicle and immediately starting firing repeatedly at him, investigators told ABC News.

Galloway was shot multiple times and died at the scene in what police officers are calling an ambush attack.

The suspect drove off, with law enforcement officers continuing the search for him.
