Yemen's Houthi rebels are launching armed drone attacks with more precision and reach than the United States and its Gulf allies have publicly acknowledged, The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday.
Citing unnamed sources, the Journal reported the easily available technology is creating new dangers for America and its Mideast allies.
"The Iranian military support to the Houthis has increased the lethality and range of their systems, resulting in a greater threat to Saudi and Emirati forces," a U.S. defense official told the Journal.
According to the Journal, the Houthis have become one of the most adept militant groups at using drones in war as its technology has evolved from small, propeller-powered surveillance drones to a larger plane-shaped model that can travel more than 900 miles at a speed of 150 mph. That puts much of the Gulf, including the Saudi and Emirati capitals, within range, the Journal noted.
"The proficiency has ramped up very quickly," Scott Crino, CEO of Red Six Solutions, a Washington-based firm that helps government agencies and other clients assess drone threats, told the Journal.
