Ron Fournier: Immigration Reform Is Good, Amnesty Plan Is 'Nuclear'

By    |   Tuesday, 11 November 2014 09:20 AM EST

Should President Barack Obama make good on his threat to follow through on executive action on immigration despite voters resounding rejection of his policies, it would be tantamount to setting off a "nuclear bomb" in Washington, making a bad situation worse, the National Journal’s Ron Fournier said Monday during an appearance on Fox News Channel's "On the Record," Breitbart News reports.

Fournier, the National Journal’s senior political columnist and editorial director, points out that Obama and the Democrats had the opportunity to get the immigration issue "the way they wanted it, and they punted on it, because they preferred to have the issue in the midterms."

For the sake of the 12 million people living in the shadows, American business people and the country as a whole, immigration must be tackled, Fournier said, but not the way Obama is approaching it.

"I'm actually in favor of what you would call liberal immigration reform, to use that lowercase l," Fournier said.

"I don't think the President of the United States should be doing something this important on his own, for a couple reasons. One, I think it's a nuclear bomb that's just going to make a gridlocked Washington more so, which is one thing the country clearly sent a message on, they don't want any more gridlock.

"Two, if you really want immigration reform, if you're the President of the United States and you really want to reform the system, the worst way to do it is this way. This kind of social legislation has to have some bipartisan support for it to be durable and lasting and real," he said.

The president "is not capable, doesn’t have the skills … or willingness to deal with Congress," he added.

Conversely, he said, Republican members of Congress "don’t have what it takes to cut a fair deal either.

"They are very afraid of their right wing and they’re demagoguing on this issue."
