Seventy-seven percent of self-identified Democrats said they want President Donald Trump impeached, according to CNN’s national exit polls.
Impeachment has now become a key question, because Democrats won control of the House in the midterm elections and the accompanying investigative and procedural powers.
Impeachment is by a simple majority of the House, although House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi has said she is not interested in moving to impeach the president.
However, even if there is impeachment, the Senate then holds a trial and a two-thirds super majority is needed to convict. This is considered extremely unlikely, especially after the midterm results gave Republicans an increased majority in the Senate.
Overall, 40 percent said Trump should be impeached, according to the exit polls, as only 5 percent of Republicans wanted the move and 33 percent of independents.
The 40-percent overall figure, however, is higher for impeachment than President Bill Clinton faced, who was actually impeached.
Support for impeachment is the highest in California, where 54 percent want it, followed by New York with 52 percent. The lowest level of support is in North Dakota, Tennessee and West Virginia, where about one quarter of voters said they would back impeachment.
