James Baker, a former top FBI lawyer, said he was involved in the warrant application for surveillance of Donald Trump campaign aide Carter Page, Fox News is reporting.

Baker made the acknowledgment and confirmed other “unusual steps” in the FBI probe in 2016, during closed door congressional testimony, according to the news network.

The Fox News report sparked tweets from President Donald Trump on Tuesday.

He wrote: “Former FBI top lawyer James Baker just admitted involvement in FISA (Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act) Warrant and further admitted there were IRREGULARITIES in the way the Russia probe was handled. They relied heavily on the unverified Trump “Dossier” paid for by the DNC & Clinton Campaign & funded through a...

"...big Crooked Hillary law firm, represented by her lawyer Michael Sussmann (do you believe this?) who worked Baker hard & gave him Oppo Research for “a Russia probe.” This meeting, now exposed, is the subject of Senate inquiries and much more. An Unconstitutional Hoax. @FoxNews"

Fox News also reported Baker told lawmakers it was not routine for him to normally get involved in such matters.

Meanwhile, federal investigators are probing whether Baker leaked information to the media

Reps. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, and Mark Meadows, R-N.C., wrote a letter to U.S. Attorney for Connecticut John Durham, in which they quote Baker’s lawyer, Daniel Levin, who told members of Congress in an interview that his client has “been the subject of a leak investigation. . . a criminal leak investigation that’s still active at the Justice Department.”
