Former FBI Acting Director Andrew McCabe's comments concerning his decision to launch the investigation into President Donald Trump and Russia were "a little bit chilling," because of election results that had been noticed a few years earlier, House Majority Whip James Clyburn said Thursday.

"We started noticing a couple of years ago or a couple of years before this incident there was something going on with our voting systems throughout the country," the South Carolina Democrat told CNN's "New Day." "Many of us saw some results, especially down in South Carolina where we saw someone win at the Democratic primary for the United States Senate, nobody ever heard of, nobody knew."

The same thing was happening in "little places" all around the country, Clyburn added, and he believes the nation needs to get to the bottom of what's happening with its elections and make sure nobody is "predetermining who wins" and that the process is fair and transparent.

In the CBS News interview, reporter Scott Pelley also said McCabe told him about meetings at the Justice Department, where it was discussed if Vice President Mike Pence and members of the cabinet could remove Trump, under the 25th Amendment, and Clyburn said he did not find that surprising, either.

"Those of us who were around during the (Richard) Nixon investigations, those of us who looked in on Spiro Agnew and what was going on with him, we aren't surprised at all," said Clyburn.
