Former FBI Director James Comey said he was the one who directed two agents from the agency to interview President Donald Trump's then-National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.

Fox News noted the interview led to criminal charges being filed against Flynn. And a federal judge has ordered special counsel Robert Mueller to produce all documents relating to Flynn's questioning, ahead of sentencing.

Comey made his remarks in a forum discussion with MSNBC's Nicolle Wallace, host of Deadline: White House. He said the FBI did not follow its typical procedure in dealing with a White House.

"I sent them – something I probably wouldn't have done or gotten away with in a more organized administration," he said citing the administrations of George W. Bush and Barack Obama.

And he noted Bush and Obama are "two men that all of us, perhaps, have increased appreciation for over the last two years."

"In both of those administrations, there was a process," he said. "So, if the FBI had wanted to send agents into the White House to interview a senior official you would work through the White House counsel. There would be discussions, approvals . . . I thought it was early enough. Let's just send a couple of guys over."

Fox News said the January 2017 interview with FBI is the basis of Flynn's guilty plea to making false statements.
