The top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday sent a letter to White House counsel Donald McGahn requesting documents on Jared Kushner's role in the firing of James Comey and Michael Flynn, The Hill reported.

"In order to conduct a fair, balanced and thorough investigation the committee needs to have the facts and the requested documents. This is also important for the committee's upcoming questioning of Mr. Kushner," Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., wrote in the letter.

Comey was fired as FBI chief in May by President Donald Trump in order to restore "public trust and confidence" in the agency. Michael Flynn resigned as national security adviser in February following reports he had misled Vice President Mike Pence and other officials about his contacts with Russia.

Kushner, who is Trump's son-in-law and one of his senior advisers, is a key focus in Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into possible collusion between Trump's campaign team and Russian officials in the 2016 US presidential election.

Feinstein also wants documents on Kushner's meeting with a Russian lawyer named Natalia Veselnitskaya and others at Trump Tower in June 2016. Former campaign chairman Paul Manafort and Donald Trump Jr. also attended the meeting.

The Justice Department and both chambers of Congress are investigating alleged Russian attempts to meddle in the 2016 elections.
