Jared Kushner's lawyer said Friday that she was stepping back from representing the top White House adviser in the Russia investigation in deference to another member of the administration's legal team.

Jamie Gorelick, the Washington attorney that has represented Kushner since the transition period, told The National Law Journal that she was removing herself from the probe as she is "wrapping up" her services for the president's son-in-law.

Kushner will now be represented on Russia by Abbe Lowell, a noted Washington criminal defense attorney, Gorelick said.

"As you may recall, and as we have stated, once Bob Mueller and three of our partners left the firm to form the Special Counsel's Office, we advised Mr. Kushner to get independent legal advice whether to continue with us as counsel," she told the Law Journal in an email.

"As [a] result of this process, Abbe is now responsible for the Russia-related inquiries."

Kushner originally hired Gorelick to represent him on ethics and security issues. He hired Lowell last month for the Moscow investigation.

Mueller, the former FBI director, was a partner at Gorelick's law firm, WilmerHale, leaving when he was named special counsel for the Russia probe by the Justice Department in May.

Gorelick, 67, a longtime Democratic donor, was considered a leading pick for attorney general for Hillary Clinton, according to news reports, and had served as deputy attorney general under President Bill Clinton.
