Jeb Bush: Conservatives Should Feel Comfortable with Immigration Reform

By    |   Sunday, 10 March 2013 11:38 AM EDT

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush said his new book, "Immigration Wars: Forging an American Solution," is aimed at conservatives who might have a hard time embracing the increasingly important path-to-citizenship issue.

Bush appeared Sunday in an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press” to talk about what has been described as a flip flop on his previous position of enabling undocumented workers to become U.S. citizens.

“Illegal immigrants should not get better benefits at a lower cost than people that have been waiting patiently,” he said.

Bush also said he supports the efforts in the House and the Senate to craft a comprehensive immigration-reform bill.

“What’s going on in the Senate and in the House right now is very positive,” he said. “I support what Sens. [Lindsey] Graham and [Marco] Rubio and [John] McCain and [Jeff] Flake are doing with their Democratic counterparts, and if they can find a way to get to a path to citizenship over the long haul, then I would support that.

"It (immigration reform) is a place where, I think, a lot of conservatives should feel comfortable that there’s a way to do this and not violate their principles.”
