Jeff Sessions is considering running for his old seat in the Senate, Politico is reporting.

The website attributed the information to two people.

The Alabama seat is currently held by Democrat Doug Jones, who right now is viewed as the most vulnerable incumbent senator facing reelection in 2020, according to Politico.

Sessions, who was forced to step down as attorney general on Wednesday, had spent two decades in the Senate. But President Donald Trump’s attacks may have hurt his popularity in the state, Politico said.

Still, former Sen. Luther Strange, who had been appointed to fill out Sessions’ term in the Senate, is pushing for the former attorney general to run.

“Jeff Sessions for Senate in 2020!” he wrote on Twitter on Wednesday.

And an informal online poll by AL.com showed Sessions favored by 56 percent of those responding. Forty-four percent did not want him to run.

And Jonathan Gray, a political strategist in Alabama, told AL.com.: “I think Jeff will run for his Senate seat in 2020.”

But Jess Brown, a retired political scientist from Athens State University, isn’t so sure.

“If you put a gun to my head, I don’t think he’s going to return to Alabama and return to electoral politics.”
