Vice President Joe Biden's wife Jill Biden said Friday the country "maybe missed an opportunity" when he decided not to run for president.
"Well, I say every day, I really do feel that Joe would've made a great president,'' Biden said on NBC's
"Today" show.
"I think he has the character, I think that he's a convener. I think that one of his strengths is compromise. And so I feel, maybe America missed an opportunity. I don't know. It just wasn't the right time."
Joe Biden has served under President Barack Obama since 2009, and before that he was a senator for 36 years.
Biden thought about joining the race for president before
announcing last fall he would pass on the opportunity. The announcement ended months of
speculation that, at times, seemed to be on track to end with Biden throwing his hat into the ring.
Part of Biden's reason for not running was the fact his family was still mourning the loss of his son Beau, who died of brain cancer a year ago.
Jill Biden said she is looking forward to a few things when she's out of the spotlight starting next January, when the next president and vice president take office.
"I think I'll be glad to leave behind the fact that I haven't driven a car in eight years,'' she she told NBC's Natalie Morales. "It will be nice to have a little bit of independence again."
Biden also said there's one thing on her to-do list the day after her husband's current job is over.
"I will be putting on my sneaks and going for a run alone,'' she said.
