House Freedom Caucus co-founder Rep. Jim Jordan threw his hat into the ring for House minority leader on Wednesday, challenging Rep. Kevin McCarthy after Democrats regained control of the lower chamber.
"In 2016, the American people elected Republicans to come here and change this town,” the Ohio congressman told The Hill. “I think the president is doing just that, but I don't think they see the same intensity from folks in Congress, folks in the House of Representatives.
"Have we replaced Obamacare yet? Have we secured the border yet? Have we reformed welfare yet? No."
Jordan said the current GOP leadership in the House was not willing to engage in debate with Democrats.
He stressed that now that the GOP is in the minority in the House, we must “fight hard in the debate for the principals, for the things that we know the American people sent us here to do in 2016. Show them that we deserve to be back in power in 2020."
Jordan, who has been one of President Donald Trump's most loyal allies on Capitol Hill, is considered a longshot to win the position, according to the Washington Examiner.
Jordan has made his mark more in blocking bills and creating headaches for Republican leaders as he tried to prevent them from reaching deals with Democrats, than in getting his own legislation passed, according to The Washington Times.
This approach, however, has gained him the support of several conservative lobby groups.
