Former President Jimmy Carter, 93, has offered up his services to help the Trump administration deal with North Korea.
During an interview with CBS News slated to air Sunday morning, Carter even said President Donald Trump's White House has kept him apprised of the situation on the Korean peninsula.
Carter noted he has roughly 20 hours of experience talking with the North Koreans.
"And I understand what they want and need," Carter said. "And just this week, I had a representative from the White House who came down and gave me the latest developments with North Korea.
"I have had some criticisms of some of the public statements that President Trump has made about 'fire and brimstone' and that sort of thing being utilized."
Carter admitted that Trump has "reacted quite well" to the news that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un would like to talk with Trump face to face.
Carter traveled to North Korea and met with North Korea's leader at the time, Kim Il Sung, to negotiate a peace treaty in 1994. He later traveled to the rogue nation in 2010 to negotiate the release of an American being held there.
It was announced earlier this month that Trump agreed with sit down with Kim for an historic meeting. A date and location for the summit have not yet been revealed.
The U.S. has increased pressure on North Korea over the last year as the West tries to convince the reclusive country to curb its nuclear weapons program.
