Former Vice President Joe Biden leads Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., in a hypothetical 2020 matchup against President Donald Trump, according to a poll conducted by The Hill and the HarrisX polling company.
Biden leads Trump 42-36 percent among all registered voters surveyed, while Sanders leads Trump 38-37 percent.
"It doesn't surprise me that Biden runs relatively well against Trump," progressive strategist Ruy Teixeira told The Hill. "He's got 100 percent name recognition. He's a likable guy. I think he'd play well in different areas of the country that the Democrats haven't done so well in."
Biden, 76, has not committed to a 2020 run, but earlier this month said he was the most qualified person in the country to be president.
"The issues that we face as a country today are the issues that I've worked on my whole life — the plight of the middle class and foreign policy," the former vice president said Monday night at an event for his book tour in Montana, according to the Missoula Current.
Sanders, 77, meanwhile, has repeatedly stated he will run again if he believes he is the best candidate to defeat Trump.
The poll was conducted Dec. 16-17.
