Former House Speaker John Boehner on Thursday said the GOP has become the party of President Donald Trump, adding that Republicans are "taking a nap."
"There is no Republican Party. There's a Trump party. The Republican Party is kinda taking a nap somewhere," Boehner said at the Mackinac Policy Conference in Michigan, NBC News reports.
The former longtime congressman from Ohio went on to say that Trump, a supporter of his and oft-golfing buddy, never expected to win the election.
"The two most surprised people in the world that night were Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump," Boehner told the gathering. "I think Donald Trump promised Melania that he would not win, that she would never have to worry about living in the White House.
"It's probably why she doesn't look real happy every day. But, well, maybe one reason," Boehner said.
But Boehner said elections are not about the polls, but who shows up to vote. Trump's voters turned out, Clinton's did not, Boehner said.
"The guy ran, the guy won," Boehner said.
