You might think the man who tried to assassinate President Ronald Reagan would be locked away in a prison cell — but in reality, John Hinckley, Jr. is spending time living a cushy life in his mother's "posh, gated resort" in Virginia, The Daily Caller reports.

And despite the outrage of many Reagan allies stunned by Hinckley's lifestyle, his lawyers are pushing for privileges that would allow the gunman to travel unaccompanied to Virginia Beach to enjoy a day by the ocean, The Caller says.

His lawyers have now asked a court to allow Hinckley — whose shooting rampage allegedly involved an obsession with actress Jodi Foster and the movie "Taxi Driver" — to reside full-time in Kingsmill, where his 90-year old mother lives.

An investigation by The Daily Caller News Foundation found Hinckley — deemed not guilty by reason of insanity in 1982 — has been seen at the 2,900-acre gated community, Kingsmill on the James, which features $2 million mansions, championship golf courses, and a marina.

He is said to be allowed 17-day visits there, taking a break from the mental treatment facility that is his primary residence.

"This is absolutely so wrong. To let this guy go free," Jim Kuhn, who was an executive assistant to both Ronald and Nancy Reagan, told The Caller. "He almost killed the 40th President of the United States, coming within an inch of his heart,"
