Ohio Gov. John Kasich still won't give a direct promise that he will support Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump if he secures the party's nomination, but Kasich was sounding happier with Trump Sunday.

"I made a pledge [to the party] and I have been listening to him lately, and you notice he's toned down the rhetoric," Kasich said on ABC's "This Week."  "I hope going forward he'll be a unifier."

Of course, Kasich prefers to be the GOP nominee himself.

"I have to catch fire," Kasich said, "and if I catch fire I think the sky's the limit."

He pointed to recent polls that show him climbing, although he is in danger of being relegated to the undercard on the next GOP debate stage as Fox Business Network has announced more stringent rules to get on the main stage.

"You can't win the White House without winning Ohio," he told guest host Jonathan Karl.

"If we have a candidate that comes into Ohio that's a divider, no chance they're going to win it. People in Ohio want someone who's going to look at problems and solve them. They don't want a bunch of windbags."
