Fueling speculation he's ready to take another run for the White House, 2012 Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney called the party's 2008 standard-bearer, Arizona Sen. John McCain, on Tuesday to talk politics.
"He told me he is seriously considering it, and we discussed issues and friendships and things like that," McCain said Tuesday,
the National Journal reports.
"We had a long conversation. We are very good friends."
The National Journal said McCain told Romney he understood the desire to take another shot at the White House, noting Romney "has a legitimate reason for a rerun" given the Obama administration's troubled foreign policy.
"It's a free country," McCain said of the former Massachusetts governor's decision about another White House campaign. "Obviously, the things that were debated about national security — clearly the president was completely wrong and Mitt has a point there."
It's been pointed out many of
Romney's predictions have played out on the world stage, including his assessment of Russia as the nation's "number one geopolitical foe" and his assertion illegal immigration remained a continued threat to the American economy.
McCain said he'd consider supporting Romney at some point — though
he's openly encouraged South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham to take a shot in 2016.
McCain also conceded he's not about to join the presidential fray.
"I have learned my lesson," he said.
