Julian Castro, who is making a bid for the Democratic presidential nomination, said he understands “the sentiment” behind Rep. Alexandria Ocasio’s comment comparing detention facilities at the southern border to “concentration camps.”
Castro made his remarks Wednesday during an interview on CNN’s “New Day.” A video excerpt of the interview was posted on the show’s Twitter account.
“Well, look, I think the point she was trying to make is that this is serious,” he said. “That this is the mistreatment of human beings.
“Of course, I understand that there is a significance to that term. But I agree with the sentiment behind what she said, which is that we can’t take this as normal. This is cruelty for these children."
“We’ve had folks who study these things say that these children, a lot of these children, these people are going to be affected for their whole lifetime and so we can’t write it off.
“I think we should focus on what she was trying to say, which is we need to end this and end it now."
Ocasio-Cortez had called the detention centers at the border “concentration camps” during a live video to her Instagram followers.
"The United States is running concentration camps on our southern border," she said. "And that is exactly what they are. They are concentration camps."
