Rep. Justin Amash, R-Mich., already has broken from Republicans in saying President Donald Trump has committed impeachable offenses and now he has severed ties with the conservative House Freedom Caucus, CNN reported.

"I have the highest regard for them and they're my close friends," Amash told CNN. "I didn't want to be a further distraction for the group."

Amash was a founding member of the House Freedom Caucus, which includes about three dozen conservatives, but he has since stopped going to the group's meetings over their support for the president.

Amash told the caucus of his intentions during a Monday night meeting, stepping aside from the board and the group, adding it was voluntary and not forced him in for not supporting the president.

"It was a positive meeting," Amash told CNN. "It wasn't negative."

Amash had published tweetstorms arguing against President Trump's conduct and added a tweet on Tuesday morning:

"…he shall take Care that the Laws be faithfully executed…"
—Constitution, Art. II, §3
