E-cigarette maker Juul will cut back on social media and remove certain products from stores in an effort to reduce access to minors, CNN reports.
"Our intent was never to have youth use JUUL," CEO Kevin Burns wrote in a statement released Tuesday.
He added that the company plans on "eliminating our own social media accounts and continuing to monitor and remove inappropriate material from third-party accounts,” and that it will cease the sale of most Juul flavor pods in retail stores, and sales on its website will be restricted to customers aged 21 and older.
Burns notes that the vast majority, over 99 percent, of Juul-related content on social media has “no affiliation to our company.”
"To remove ourselves entirely from participation in the social conversation, we have decided to shut down our U.S.-based social media accounts on Facebook and Instagram," he wrote. "Our presence on Twitter will be confined to non-promotional communications only.”
The company’s YouTube channel will only post testimonials made by former smokers who have since switched to Juul products.
Juul is "committed to improving the lives of the world's one billion adult smokers, with the ultimate goal of eliminating cigarettes,” Burns wrote. “We don't want anyone who doesn't smoke, or already use nicotine, to use JUUL products. We certainly don't want youth using the product."
