CNN is projecting Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., will win re-election to the Senate seat he has held since 2013, defeating Republican challenger Corey Stewart.

Kaine, the 2016 running mate of Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, had not been challenged in the race, notes CNN. Stewart, a native of Minnesota, chairs the Prince William County Board of Supervisors and campaigned on defending a statue of Robert E. Lee in Charlottesville and calling to allow the display of the Confederate flag as part of the state's heritage.

CNN notes national Republicans did not back Stewart, and some working on House races were also concerned his campaign would harm those of party incumbents.
