Kansas Gov. Brownback on Opponent: 'He's a True Liberal'

By    |   Monday, 29 September 2014 07:06 PM EDT

Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback — in a neck-and-neck re-election bid with Democrat Paul Davis — says voters will choose him once they learn his opponent wants to carry on the "Obama agenda."

"He's a true liberal, a two-time Obama delegate, voted for a ton of tax increases up and down the line," Brownback said Monday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"He really has the Obama agenda in line and he's going to raise your taxes. That's what he wants.

"He wants to go back to the old model of having a high-income tax state, which is what caused all of our problems in the first place."

Brownback said voters need to understand the impressive strides that have been made in the Sunflower State.

"We're down 3,000 employees as a state of Kansas to be able to get our tax rates on down, so as people put those two together they'll go, look, I'm going to go with a guy that's the Reagan Republican, not the Obama Democrat."

Asked why he was in a near dead heat with Davis, a partner in the law firm of Fagan, Emert & Davis, Brownback said:

"Change is tough…. We had a pension system that's near bankruptcy, we had lost private sector jobs last decade, We were the second-highest tax state in the region in income taxes and you had people leaving the state of Kansas and not forming any businesses," he said.

"So what we had to do is a whole series of changes. Oh, and a year before I took office on July 1, 2010, we had $876.05 in the state bank account out of a $14 billion budget.

"They just had really run the thing into the ground. So you had to make a bunch of changes and change is difficult. At the end of the day, that's what the difficulty is in the overall election cycle."

Brownback said Americans are deeply concerned about the direction of the country.

"They're not just mad, they're concerned and they're going, 'Can't you guys get us moving in the right direction?'

"It's like the America that they want is just kind of slipping away from them," he said.
