Rove: 'Stinky' Clinton Foundation 'Does Good Things in a Bad Way'

(Fox News' "Fox & Friends")

The Clinton Foundation does good things, but it does "good things in a bad way and in a way that makes it sound like it's quid pro quo," GOP strategist and Fox News commentator Karl Rove said Wednesday.

"Charity Navigator, a group that evaluates charities, criticized long ago the foundation for spending too little on programs and too much on overhead, including some $40 million to move the Clintons around the country," Rove told the "Fox & Friends" program, answering a contention by Clinton family aide and friend James Carville that the family had never earned money from the foundation.

"Now, he may be right that they haven't taken a penny, but their lifestyle has been subsidized by it," Rove said, "and I believe Chelsea Clinton is actually now on the payroll of the foundation. Look, this is stinky."

There are too many opportunities for conflict or the appearance of conflict, and that undermines public confidence and trust in the president, so the foundation should be shuttered, said Rove.

"If she is elected, they need to shut it down," Rove said of the charity. "No more using 'good works' to subsidize their lifestyle and put themselves in a place that looks like a conflict of interest; it is a conflict of interest."

The revelation more than half the private individuals and organizations who had donated to the Clinton Foundation had sought meetings or phone calls with then-Secretary of State Clinton, was also "pretty jaw-dropping," Rove said.

"Realize this is only the first two years of her term as secretary of state and half of the private individuals," he said. "This is after in January 2009 at her confirmation hearing she promised the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that she would avoid even the appearance of conflict."

In other matters, Rove, who has been a frequent critic of GOP nominee Donald Trump, said Wednesday it appears the Republican's campaign appears to be headed in the right direction, and he believes the new management team, "or at least, Kellyanne Conway" seems to be working out well.
