Karl Rove: GOP Has Strong 'Cast of Characters' to Win Back Senate

By    |   Sunday, 16 March 2014 01:23 PM EDT

GOP strategist Karl Rove is joining the growing list of pundits who believe their party will take over the Senate in November.

"It’s highly likely that Republicans pick up the majority," Rove said on "Fox News Sunday."

Rove pointed out that many Democratic senators are retiring and President Barack Obama has low approval ratings in red states where Democratic incumbents are seeking re-election. He also said new GOP candidates such as Rep. Cory Gardner in Colorado and former Sen. Scott Brown in New Hampshire, offer hope.

But he warned that Republicans must avoid nominating controversial candidates such as Rep. Todd Akin of Missouri, who drew controversy in the 2012 election when he said that women who were victims of "legitmate rape" rarely got pregnant.

Rove said the GOP has a much better "cast of characters" this go-around.

Other pundits predicting a Senate takeover include Democrat Kirsten Powers and MSNBC's Chris Matthews.
