As Georgians begin early voting Monday for the Jan. 5 Senate runoff elections, incumbent Sens. Kelly Loeffler, R-Ga., and David Perdue, R-Ga., are requesting a list of all registered voters in the state, Newsweek reports.
The two incumbents want Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to release the list, they say, to preserve the "integrity" of the election.
Neither Senate race saw a candidate garner 50% of the vote, pushing both contests to runoffs by state law. The state also allows people who did not vote in the general election to vote in the runoff, and Democrats have been pushing for new voters to register. The deadline for registration was Dec. 7.
Loeffler and Perdue say not having access to a list of who is registered to vote is "unacceptable."
"This lack of transparency needs to be rectified immediately, or the integrity of our elections will remain threatened," the senators wrote in a joint statement.
Georgia saw record turnout Nov. 3 in a race that handed the once solidly red state to Democrat Joe Biden. President Donald Trump has been unsuccessfully challenging the results, with Georgia casting its electoral votes for Biden on Monday.
With Trump's continued challenges failing across contested states, Republicans need at least one of the Georgia Republicans to retain their seats to keep at least a 51-49 majority in the Senate. Otherwise, wins by both Georgia Democratic challengers would hand the Democrats a 50-50 tie, giving a Vice President Kamala Harris a tie-breaking vote.
It would also mean Democrats would control both houses of Congress and the White House.
