Report: ISIS Beheads Female Kurdish Fighter

By    |   Monday, 27 October 2014 07:22 PM EDT

The latest victim of an Islamic State (ISIS) beheading reportedly is a young woman dubbed the "poster child for Kobani female warriors."

A photo of the female fighter, known by the pseudonym Rehana, with the Yekineyen Parastina Jin (YPJ), or Women Protection Units and flashing a "V" sign, was tweeted by journalist Pawan Durani, the Australian news outlet 9News reports.

"Rehana has killed more than 100 ISIS terrorists" in Kobani, the tweet says. The photo was retweeted more than 5,000 times, according to 9News.

Women fighters are involved in the battle for Kobani, a Syrian town on the border with Turkey that's become a key battleground in the war against the ISIS, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reports – though there has been no official confirmation of the young woman's beheading.

The Australian news station cited "gruesome photos purporting to show her decapitated body circulating on social media." Radio Free Europe reports those sites are on pro-ISIS social media accounts.

Throughout the siege of Kobani, images of female Kurdish fighters have circulated widely on social media, Radio Free Europe reports.

Early this month, Deilar Kanj Khamis, known by her military name Arin Mirkan, blew herself up outside Kobani, killing 10 ISIS fighters, the Daily Mail reports.

In April, Kurdish fighters created all-female combat units that have grown to include more than 10,000 women, the Daily Mail reports .

Kurdish women fighters have fought alongside men for years in a guerrilla war against Turkey, seeking an independent Kurdistan that would encompass parts of Turkey, Syria, Iraq and Iran, the Daily Mail adds.

ISIS since August has posted videos of its beheadings of American journalists and others.
