NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt Jr., his wife Amy and their child were on a plane that crashed in Tennessee on Thursday afternoon, several media outlets reported.

The Earnhardts were taken to a hospital for evaluation, his sister, Kelley Earnhardt, tweeted.

Kelley Earnhardt confirmed the crash on Twitter.

"...Dale, Amy & Isla along with his two pilots were involved in a crash in Bristol TN this afternoon," she tweeted. "Everyone is safe and has been taken to the hospital for further evaluation. We have no further information at this time. Thank you for your understanding."

Airport manager Dan Cogan told WJHL the private plane ran off the end of the runway at Elizabethton, Tennessee, Airport and caught fire. Elizabethton is about 20 minutes from Johnson City, Tennessee.

Some media outlets also posted video of the crash scene.

TMZ reported the FAA said the airplane rolled off the end of the runway, and the National Transportation Safety Board is expected to determine a cause of the crash.

The plane was registered under Earnhardt's JR Motorsports, and is a 10-seat, twin-engine Cessna Citation Latitude, TMZ reported.

Earnhardt Jr., who retired from racing full-time in 2017, also has been an analyst for NASCAR on NBC.
