The Los Angeles Times editorial board announced that it endorses Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
In the endorsement, the board writes that electing the Republican candidate, Donald Trump, "could be catastrophic for the nation."
"He has never held elected office and has shown himself temperamentally unfit to do so. He has run a divisive, belligerent, dishonest campaign, repeatedly aligning himself with racists, strongmen, and thugs while maligning or dismissing large segments of the American public," the editorial board wrote.
The board praised Clinton, saying she is "one of the best prepared candidates to seek the presidency in many years. As a first lady, a Democratic senator from New York and secretary of state in President Obama's first term, she immersed herself with the details of government, which is why her positions on the issues today are infinitely better thought-out than those of her opponent."
Clinton has weaknesses, but they do not compare with Trump's, according to the board, which cited Clinton's "penchant for secrecy" and said she is "a little too comfortable with the use of military force."
"To be a great president, she will have to overcome her own weaknesses. But compared with Trump's infirmities as a candidate, her failings are insignificant," the board wrote.
The Times board slammed Trump, calling him a "thin-skinned demagogue who is unqualified and unsuited for president."
"It's absurd — and perilous — to portray this election, as so many are doing, as a choice of the ‘lesser of two evils' or to suggest that her flaws are in any way on a level with his," according to the Times board.
The Los Angeles Times endorsed Barack Obama for president in 2008, and in his bid for reelection in 2012, saying, "Obama brought a certain levelheadedness to the White House that had been in short supply during the previous eight years."
The Dallas Morning News had previously announced that it also was endorsing Clinton, joining the Cincinnati Enquirer and The Houston Chronicle.
