A Reagan administration official compared Republican lawmakers who support President Donald Trump to aliens in a 1950s horror film.

Former White House Office of Public Liaison director Linda Chavez said on CNN that Republicans who continue to back Trump in the face of corruption allegations and an impeachment inquiry aren't doing their jobs as public servants.

"It's like the invasion of the body snatchers," Chavez said. "I don't know who these people are, I mean they have so changed their tune. This is really serious."

Chavez added that the Republican Party used to be "devoted to the Constitution. And what I see happening now is people who are absolutely abrogating their duty.

"They are putting politics first and they're scared. They're scared of Donald Trump."

Trump is accused of using his office for political gain by trying to bargain with Ukraine to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden, one of his rivals in the 2020 election, over allegations of corruption involving Biden and his son. Two whistleblowers have come forward with concerns over Trump's actions.

Trump also has raised the topic with other countries' leaders.
