Lindsey Graham: Judiciary Committee Will Probe Rosenstein

Lindsey Graham: Judiciary Committee Will Probe Rosenstein

By    |   Friday, 15 March 2019 03:01 PM EDT

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., announced Friday the panel he chairs, the Senate Judiciary Committee, is investigating alleged talk within the Department of Justice two years ago to invoke the 25th Amendment and attempt to remove President Donald Trump from office.

Graham sent a letter to Attorney General William Barr, saying the panel intends to take a look at statements allegedly made by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein in 2017 to former acting FBI director Andrew McCabe and others at the DOJ.

"During a recent interview on '60 Minutes,' … McCabe explained how … Rosenstein discussed with him and others within the Department of Justice (DOJ) the possibility of removing the president of the United States by invoking the 25th Amendment," Graham wrote. "In addition, Mr. McCabe described how the deputy attorney general, in a manner that was 'absolutely serious,' offered to wear a wire into the White House to record the president and gather evidence against him.

"The Committee is deeply concerned with these discussions and whether they essentially indicate that two of the highest ranking law enforcement officials in the United States were discussing what amounts to a coup against the president. Accordingly, the Committee plans to conduct oversight into these discussions and related matters."

Graham, who became chairman of the Judiciary Committee in January, already said last month that his panel would conduct a probe of the DOJ regarding Rosenstein's reported statements.
