Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin appeared to challenge Sen. Lisa Murkowski to a primary race in 2022 following her no vote on Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh two weeks ago, but Murkowski tells the Hill she isn’t concerned.
“I don’t know the former governor’s interest in being involved in elected politics again and she’s really been out of the picture in the state for many years now,” Murkowski told The Hill.
“I don’t know whether this is just wishful thinking by some that would like to see me out so they’re looking for names,” she added.
Murkowski was the only Republican senator to vote against a measure to end debate on Kavanaugh’s nomination. The measure ultimately passed, setting up a confirmation vote.
The Alaska senator said she had been wrestling with the decision, describing it as the most difficult of her career.
“I have been wrestling with whether or not this was about the qualifications of a good man, or is this bigger than the nominee, and I believe we are dealing with issues right now that are bigger than a nominee,” Murkowski said.
Palin had urged Murkowski to “do the right thing.”
Following Murkowski’s vote, she tweeted: “Hey @LisaMurkowski – I can see 2022 from my house.”
